TODOS
UNIDOS in
collaboration with JFCS/East Bay's Senior Groups, held monthly at Bay
Point Ambrose Center and at the Pittsburg Senior Center, are the only
ongoing senior educational and social support groups for Latinos in either
community.
The
groups offer a consistent place for seniors to socialize and share a meal,
while also benefiting from information about health and community resources
critical to the needs of seniors. At each month's meeting, community agencies
such as Caring Hands, Money Management, Medicare, Lyons Visual Center,
Hospice of Contra Costa, Family Caregiver Alliance, Foundation for Osteoporosis,
and Alzheimer's Association provide bilingual speakers on relevant health
and mental health topics. In addition, at each meeting members participate
in arts and crafts projects, discussion on cooking traditional foods in
nutritious ways, and group exercise activities.
A
leadership team of senior health promoters and volunteers from the group
regularly helps with the planning and coordinating of events. This year,
over 100 seniors have participated in the groups.
Senior
Appreciation Day and Health Resources Fair: This unique annual event provides
local seniors of all backgrounds and ethnicities, along with their family
caregivers, information about community resources, on-site health screenings,
health education, entertainment and food. This special day allows the
district an opportunity to show seniors how much they are cared for and
appreciated by their community. JFCS/East Bay, Area Agency on Aging and
Todos Unidos has played a leading role in initiating and coordinating
this event, which has been held at the Ambrose Recreation Center in Bay
Point and has included the collaborative participation of more than 50
agencies serving the Bay Point community.
